Oklahoma is just a poor copy of Pennsylvania, apparently
When you look at a map of your state, the collection of town names splattered across it creates a sort of unique harmony. What would upstate New York be without Syracuse, Albany, Rochester, and Buffalo? What would Oklahoma be without Watonga, Okeene, Goldsby, Okmulgee, Muskogee, et al? So you sort of some sort of odd pride about this collection of random names that represent your state.
So it was sort of a shock when I found out that some of the towns along US 77 are ripped off from Pennsylvania. Yes, even WYNNEWOOD, which seemed like the most Oklahoman name you could possibly have. (Though Wynnewood, PA is pronounced “win-wood”, while the Oklahoma version inexplicably mutated to “whinney-wood”.)
So we’re a state of plagiarists, I guess?
